One of the most common places to find a console table is inside lobby's and hallway's, where they not only prove to be functional, but can provide a focal point, or point of interest. Positioned in a hallway, they provide the perfect place to keep your keys, or place the mail or newspapers that come through the door. You will often find a one of these tables with a mirror placed above it, this is especially true of those found in hallways, providing a perfect opportunity to check your appearance before leaving your home.
Console tables have an enormous role to play in the contemporary interiors, and each of them represents a subtle form of beauty and perfection. There is no doubt about the fact that the idea of using these tables ways back to the 17th century, but the trend of the modern era has accepted them with open arms.
Around the 17th-century in Italy, a console table was a major manifestation of the culture of furniture made for the purpose of display. Many examples of the period were carved and were, in fact, some of the finest pieces of sculpture as much as furniture. An opulent group of consoles was made in 1675-78 for the Palazzo Colonna in Rome; where the supports for the tops were commonly carved as human figures, eagles, tumbling putti (cupids), luxuriant foliage, and dolphins, and they often were gilded.
